Best Eye Training Apps
& Vision Training
Programs Compared
We're the team behind Visionary, so read this as a maker's comparison of selected Gabor patch apps, free browser tools and clinical programs: what each is for, where it runs, and what its evidence does and does not establish.
What We Compare
Written by Numentio, LLC, the maker of Visionary. This is a product comparison, not a clinical ranking or an independent medical review. Features and prices can change; follow the official product links before choosing. Research using similar patterns does not establish that every app has the same results.
Visionary
✅ Active iOSA guided iPhone and iPad app with short, adaptive Gabor patch exercises inspired by perceptual-learning research. Unlike RevitalVision, it's a consumer wellness app, not a medical device, and it hasn't been tested in a clinical study.
✅ Strengths
- • More than 20 adaptive exercises, including Gabor-patch tasks
- • A personalized daily plan
- • One free session every day; 7-day free trial on the annual plan
- • A few minutes a day, on iPhone and iPad
- • Built around reading, fine print and contrast
- • Progress in each exercise
⚠️ Limitations
- • iPhone and iPad only
- • Not a medical device and not clinically tested
- • Newer to market than RevitalVision
NeuroVerge
A free browser-based Gabor training option. Its official site describes it as open source, with no account needed and progress stored on your device.
Useful if you want
Gabor practice on a computer without installing a phone app or subscribing.
Check before choosing
Local progress is different from a synced account. Its references to perceptual-learning research do not by themselves establish clinical results for this product.
Price: Free. Platform: Browser. NeuroVerge's official site (reviewed November 4, 2026).
FOCAL
A Gabor-focused app offered through the App Store, with adaptive tasks and progress tracking. Its research page describes three games and explicitly says the cited studies did not test FOCAL.
Useful if you want
A phone routine focused on Gabor tasks.
Check before choosing
Review the current trial, renewal terms and device requirements in its App Store listing. Published study outcomes are not a promised result from the app.
Price: Website advertises $9/month or $59/year USD and a 7-day trial. Official product and pricing; research explanation (reviewed November 4, 2026; store prices may vary).
RevitalVision
✅ Active ClinicalThe original clinical Gabor patch program, FDA-cleared as a medical device and used under a doctor's supervision. Uses a "lateral masking" technique where flanking Gabor patches are displayed alongside a target. Access and pricing are arranged through a provider; it serves a different purpose from a consumer wellness app.
✅ Strengths
- • FDA-cleared medical device
- • Published clinical studies
- • Lateral masking technique (Polat methodology)
- • FDA-cleared for amblyopia (ages 9+); presbyopia and post-LASIK use is off-label
- • Doctor-supervised with progress monitoring
⚠️ Limitations
- • $500+ out of pocket (rarely covered by insurance)
- • Requires doctor referral and supervision
- • Desktop-only (Windows PC required)
- • Dated UI — designed for clinical settings, not consumers
- • Limited availability outside the US
GlassesOff
❌ DiscontinuedThe pioneering mobile Gabor patch app, developed by an Israeli team in collaboration with UC Berkeley researchers. GlassesOff was featured in the New York Times, CBS News, and Fox News. The company published studies of its own app, run by people with a financial interest in it. Google Play dropped it in December 2022, users were told it would stop working in January 2023, and it is no longer in the App Store.
✅ What Made It Good
- • First mobile Gabor patch app
- • Company-published studies (see the research review for their limits)
- • Affordable subscription pricing
⚠️ Why It Failed
- • No longer available in any app store
- • Removed from Google Play in Dec 2022; shut down Jan 2023
- • No ongoing development or support
CureSee
✅ Active Desktop OnlyAn AI-driven vision therapy platform from India, primarily designed for amblyopia (lazy eye), convergence insufficiency, and strabismus. Uses Gabor patches alongside dichoptic exercises and random-dot stereograms. Featured on Shark Tank India. Designed for its target conditions, not for presbyopia or age-related vision changes.
✅ Strengths
- • AI-personalized exercise sequences
- • Multiple exercise modalities (Gabor, dichoptic, RDS)
- • Remote monitoring by eye specialists
- • Designed for amblyopia treatment in children
⚠️ Limitations
- • Not designed for presbyopia
- • Desktop only (Windows/Mac, no mobile)
- • Primarily marketed in India
- • Requires prescription from eye specialist
AmblyoPlay
✅ Active Lazy Eye OnlyA gamified vision therapy solution for lazy eye (amblyopia) and binocular vision disorders. Uses dichoptic training (different images to each eye) via special glasses. Positive testimonials from parents, but fundamentally different from Gabor patch perceptual learning — it trains binocular coordination, not contrast sensitivity.
✅ Strengths
- • Designed for lazy eye in children
- • Engaging game-based format
- • Multi-platform (iOS, Android, desktop)
⚠️ Limitations
- • Not for presbyopia or age-related vision loss
- • Requires special anaglyph glasses
- • Different mechanism than Gabor perceptual learning
- • Primarily designed for children
Bates Method / Eye Exercise Apps
⚠️ No EvidenceVarious apps (Eye Trainer, Vision Workout, Eyes Recovery, etc.) based on eye muscle exercises like palming, sunning, and focus shifting. While these exercises may reduce temporary eye strain, a systematic review (Rawstron et al., 2005) found no objective evidence they improve visual acuity, correct refractive errors, or reverse presbyopia.

Common Questions About Vision Training Apps
What are the best eyesight training apps for beginners?
Start with your purpose and device: a free browser demo for trying a task, a guided app for a routine, or an eye-care provider for a diagnosed condition. Compare the actual exercises, price and evidence for the specific product. A game score is not a clinical measurement.
Are there free vision training apps, and how do they compare with paid ones?
NeuroVerge offers free browser training, and our free browser demos let you try three Gabor tasks without an account. Visionary includes one free adaptive session a day with optional Premium. FOCAL offers a subscription trial. Paying for an app does not itself establish that it has better clinical evidence.
Are there AR or VR-based eyesight training apps?
Some headset products are developed for clinical conditions such as amblyopia. That is a different purpose from general visual practice. The consumer Gabor options compared here use an ordinary screen; ask your eye-care provider about treatment for a diagnosed condition.
Can an app improve visual acuity?
Evidence belongs to the specific product and protocol tested. Some perceptual-learning studies, including studies of GlassesOff, reported changes in visual-performance measures, with important design limitations. Those findings do not validate Visionary, which has not been clinically tested, or guarantee changes in eyesight or glasses use.
Is there a vision training app for Android?
Visionary is currently an iPhone and iPad app. Our free Gabor demos and NeuroVerge run in a browser, providing a way to try Gabor tasks without an iOS installation. Browser practice is not an Android version of Visionary.
The Bottom Line
If you want guided, adaptive visual practice on your phone, try Visionary's free daily session and see whether the routine fits you. It's a wellness app, not a replacement for eye care.
