Free Gabor Patch Training: Spot the Different Tilt
Three Gabor patches appear below. Two share the same orientation — find the one that's different. The difference gets smaller after correct answers and larger after a miss.
20 rounds, free in your browser. No account or download needed. This is visual practice, not an eye test. To create your own patterns, use the Gabor patch generator.

What Is Orientation Discrimination?
How V1 Neurons Work
Your primary visual cortex (V1) contains neurons that are exquisitely tuned to specific orientations. Each neuron fires most for a line or edge at its "preferred" angle. Orientation tasks like this one are a classic way to study how that tuning changes with practice.
Why This Works
Researchers use orientation-discrimination tasks to study visual perceptual learning. Practice can improve performance on the trained task; transfer to everyday vision varies by protocol and is not guaranteed.
What it does and doesn't show
Getting better at spotting small tilt differences is progress in this task. It doesn't, on its own, mean better reading or less eye strain.
Adaptive Difficulty
This demo uses a 3-down, 1-up staircase, a standard method in perception research. Three correct answers in a row makes it harder; one mistake eases it back. The task adjusts difficulty from your recent answers.
